Who We Are & What We Do

Almost Home Canine Rescue is a non-kill, volunteer dog rescue organization operating out of Calgary, AB.

We are dedicated to rescuing homeless dogs, surrendered dogs and those in danger of abuse or neglect.

We provide a spay/neuter and return program to struggling communities to help control the dog population.

AHCR places dogs in loving, responsible, and committed permanent homes. We take considerable care in finding good matches and educating prospective adopters about the responsibilities and costs of bringing a dog into their homes and lives.

We are a non profit rescue that relies on the time and generosity of our donors. Contributions of all kinds are pivotal to keeping our operations going. All donations are gratefully accepted.

  • Our fosters can attend training sessions with our trainer to set them up for success

  • The easiest way to adopt, is to foster. We give first selection to our fosters (once they undergo a vetting process of course)

  • We provide all things needed (food, medication) for each dog while fostering

  • More details, as well as available dogs, can be found in our Foster Section

We hope to hear from you soon!

Get Involved

Foster

Bringing a dog into your home is a special, heartwarming, and highly rewarding experience.

Our fosters temporarily take in rescue dogs and provide them with a warm, loving environment while we search for their new forever homes.

Donate

AHCR depends on donations to give our dogs the best care possible.

All donations are gratefully accepted through our online portal, or in person at the rescue.

If you would like to donate professional services, please get in touch with us.

Volunteer

Volunteers are an integral part of our operation. Helping out is a great way to meet like-minded people while gaining new skills!

Our volunteers take on a variety of roles such as helping at the rescue, transporting dogs to and from vet appointments, and participating in fundraisers.

Wish List

Our wish list is comprised of items we need in order to run the rescue and keep each pup happy and comfortable.

Items can be dropped off at the rescue - or donate online through our Amazon wish list!

Dog For A Day

Going on an adventure? Take one of our rescue dogs with you!

Our Dog for a Day program lets you "adopt" one of our pups for an afternoon (once you have completed a volunteer application and the necessary training). Enjoy fun activities such as a walk, biking, an ice cream trip, or an out-of-town hike!

Fundraise

AHCR hosts frequent fundraisers to raise money for the rescue. Your participation makes these fundraisers both fun and successful for our pups.

If you are interested in fundraising on behalf of the rescue, please contact us.

Why Adopt?

1. You're giving a dog a second chance.

Our rescue dogs have experienced a life of neglect, abuse or abandonment. By adopting, you're giving a dog that crucial second chance to live a life full of warmth, happiness and love.

2. Rescue dogs make amazing pets and companions.

There can sometimes be a misconception that rescue dogs come with physical and behavioral problems. While it is true that some dogs require a little more patience and behavior training, most pooches are ready and eager to join new families. They make just as amazing pets as store-bought pups (plus, some of them are already house-trained - score!).

3. They give so much more than they take.

Studies have shown several benefits of owning a dog. Not only is it proven to lower stress, depression, and anxiety in humans, but pet ownership has been linked to: better self-esteem and self-care, increased physical fitness, heightened conscientiousness, and a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

There are also many positive benefits for children. Those who are raised with pets exhibit higher self-esteem, compassion and empathy for others, and better non-verbal communication skills - to name a few.

4. Adopting helps more than one dog.

By adopting a rescue dog, you're making room in the shelter for another dog in need, and freeing up resources so we can continue to help dogs in need.

5. A dog's love is priceless.

By taking in a homeless dog and giving them a family, you become their entire world - and there is truly no price you can put on a dog's love.
